Moving to Thailand

Planning a move to Thailand involves much more than shipping your belongings. For many French retirees, the key is understanding the difference between residence rights and the rules governing household-goods imports. Your visa category, the volume you actually need to ship, potential customs duties and your final destination—Bangkok, Phuket, Koh Samui or elsewhere—will shape your move. Easygroupage helps you plan international shipping, customs documentation and final delivery.

Preparing your move to Thailand

Ship only what you really need

When moving to Thailand for retirement, shipping an entire French household is rarely the best option. Rentals aimed at expatriates in Bangkok, Phuket and Koh Samui are often furnished or partly furnished, with air conditioning, built-in storage and major appliances. Compare your inventory with what your new home already provides before shipping wardrobes, beds, refrigerators or washing machines.

Large solid-wood furniture, deep sofas and non-dismantlable pieces may also be difficult to move into condominiums or villas with narrow access. Prioritise personal possessions, valuable tableware, family keepsakes and furniture you are attached to rather than everyday items that can be replaced locally.

Protect belongings against tropical humidity

Heat, humidity and monsoon seasons call for careful packing. Books, artwork, photographs, musical instruments, wooden furniture and natural fabrics are especially sensitive to moisture and to changes between outdoor heat and air-conditioned rooms.

  • Clean and dry all furniture, appliances and textiles before collection.
  • Do not pack opened products, liquids or food.
  • Identify fragile, valuable or antique items so they can be protected appropriately.
  • Never seal damp fabrics inside airtight plastic packaging.

Thailand generally uses a 220 V electricity supply, although socket types vary. Many French appliances can be used with a suitable adapter, provided their specifications are compatible. For small appliances, buying locally may be more practical.

Plan differently for mainland and island deliveries

Your final destination also affects what is worth shipping. A move to Bangkok provides easy access to shops and furniture, while deliveries to Phuket or Koh Samui may involve additional road or ferry transport. Consider the extra handling required for very heavy or fragile items.

Keep medication, medical records, glasses, chargers and essentials for the first few weeks with you rather than in your sea-freight shipment.

Customs & Documentation

Check your immigration status before shipping

For a move to Thailand, first establish your exact visa category. Non-immigrant O and O-A visas used for retirement do not automatically entitle holders to duty-free import of household goods. Certain work-related situations, such as a non-immigrant B visa combined with a qualifying one-year work permit, may be treated differently. Have your local agent confirm the applicable procedure and possible duties before loading.

Prepare the required documents

Requirements depend on your personal situation and the shipping method. They generally include a detailed inventory, transport documents bearing the owner’s exact name and the original passport for presentation to customs through the local agent. A copy alone may not be sufficient for clearance.

Allow for customs deadlines

According to the FIDI guidance referenced in the French content, the shipment must arrive after its owner enters Thailand and, where applicable, within six months of that arrival. Coordinate travel and sea-freight dates accordingly.

Identify restricted goods

Weapons and ammunition, many foods, some plants and alcoholic beverages may be prohibited or subject to special authorisation. Personal medication must also be checked in advance. Ask your Easygroupage adviser to review sensitive items before packing rather than risk a problem at destination.

Expert advice for moving to Thailand

“Many retirees assume their O or O-A visa allows them to import furniture duty-free, but that is not automatically the case. I always recommend confirming their exact immigration status before deciding how much to ship. Shared-container shipping can help keep costs under control and avoid sending items that are easy to replace locally.”

Costs & Transit Times

Choose shipping that matches your needs

The cost of moving to Thailand depends on the volume shipped, your final destination and the transport method. Retirees shipping personal effects and a few treasured pieces of furniture may benefit from shared-container shipping. For a larger household, a dedicated container may be more suitable.

For belongings you do not need immediately, storage solutions at your departure point in Europe may help reduce shipping volume. Decide this before requesting a quote, since a few cubic metres can make a difference to the budget.

Understand the stages that affect delivery times

Sea-freight shipments to Thailand generally pass through Laem Chabang, the country’s main commercial port, before onward delivery. Bangkok is usually more straightforward to reach than Phuket, Koh Samui or another island, where additional road or ferry transport may be needed.

  • Shared containers require consolidation before departure and separation of consignments on arrival.
  • Island deliveries involve additional logistics.
  • Busy port periods and adverse weather can extend delivery times.

Budget for import-related costs

Alongside ocean freight, allow for customs clearance and any duties and taxes that apply to your immigration status and shipment contents. These charges cannot be estimated from volume alone. Easygroupage works with its local partner to assess each case before departure.

Moving & Settling In

Arrange delivery to your new home

Delivery conditions vary by location. In Bangkok, many condominiums require a booked service lift, a designated delivery slot and advance authorisation for movers. Villas in Phuket and Koh Samui may be easier to access, although some private roads require a smaller vehicle. Share building and access rules with the local agent before your container arrives.

Inspect your belongings as you unpack

After several weeks at sea in tropical conditions, check vulnerable items before discarding packaging. Wooden furniture, artwork, books, musical instruments and natural textiles deserve particular attention.

  • Inspect cartons showing moisture marks or visible impact damage.
  • Check that all dismantled components and fixings are present.
  • Allow electronic devices to reach room temperature before switching them on.
  • Keep packaging until checks are complete if an insurance claim may be necessary.

Help your belongings adjust to the climate

Temperature changes between outdoor heat and air-conditioned interiors can affect wood, leather and musical instruments. Air out cartons gradually, avoid poorly ventilated rooms and allow sensitive materials to acclimatise before putting them into long-term storage.

Frequently asked questions about moving to Thailand

Retirement visas, import duties, shared containers, restricted goods and island deliveries: here are the essentials to know before shipping your belongings to Thailand.

Does a retirement visa allow you to import furniture duty-free?

No. Non-immigrant O and O-A visas commonly used by retirees do not automatically qualify household goods for duty-free import. Duties and taxes may apply even to used personal belongings. Exemptions are mainly available in specific circumstances, including certain holders of a non-immigrant B visa and a one-year work permit. Have your status checked by the local agent before shipping.

Why choose shared-container shipping when retiring in Thailand?

With shared-container shipping, you pay for the space your belongings occupy rather than an entire container. This can suit retirees taking selected furniture and personal items rather than a whole household. Depending on the shipment and local procedures, Easygroupage may also be able to arrange a streamlined clearance process for consolidated loads. Eligibility and documentation must be confirmed before departure.

Which documents are needed to move to Thailand?

Requirements depend on immigration status and shipping arrangements. They generally include the original passport for presentation to customs, a detailed inventory and transport documents issued in the owner’s exact name. A one-year work permit and supporting documents are needed when applying for the relevant duty exemption. According to the FIDI guide cited in the French source, belongings should arrive after the owner enters Thailand and within six months of arrival.

Can you ship your car or motorbike to Thailand?

The FIDI guide cited in the French source describes private imports of cars and motorbikes as prohibited, apart from specific exceptions such as certain diplomatic arrangements. Retirees should therefore not include a personal vehicle in a household shipment without specialist confirmation. Even bicycles may attract significant import duties. Check the rules for each vehicle before loading.

Which items should you avoid shipping to Thailand?

Avoid shipping alcohol, wine or food without prior approval. Alcohol may require an import licence and attract substantial duties; food products may require authorisation, and some plants or plant-based products are prohibited. Weapons and ammunition are also prohibited. Declare any personal medication in advance so its type, quantity and shipping conditions can be checked.
